Title:
Why Does the World Need Tokkatsu?

What is tokkatsu, and how does it support education in Japan? Why is tokkatsu important for educators around the world? This talk will provide examples of tokkatsu and explain two major benefits of tokkatsu. First, tokkatsu enables student to experience and practice core values such as responsibility and helpfulness. Second, tokkatsu supports students' intrinsic motivation, by responding to their needs for autonomy, belonging and competence. The intrinsic motivation built through tokkatsu supports both academic learning and character development. The twin development of academic learning and character allows Japan to pendulum swings between academic achievement and "self-esteem" that are found in some other countries.
